A brother at the table
About a year and a half ago, Harold Harris Jr sat at James's place one night while James laid out the plans for this business, piece by piece. James asked him what he would name his own record label, his own company — and the name on the table between them was Loyalty Respect Records, because loyalty and respect are what they both stand on.
Harold Harris Jr is a rapper and a musician — James's all-time favorite rapper on the planet. More than that, he is family: a brother in James's eyes, and James is a brother in his. He is a hooligan too — he came up in the struggle, and he comes from a fisherman family. His name belongs on this page, because he was part of the conversation this label was named in.
So let the record read plainly: Loyalty Respect Records is Harold's. James takes no credit for it and claims no ownership of it — he is a brother at this table, standing behind his homeboy's house.
And Harold Harris Jr is just another one of the stories this table can tell. James's mother was writing her book, The Stories This Table Can Tell, and now James is completing her book — he counts it a pleasure and an honor to keep adding to it for many more years. The original table she was writing about had sat in the house since 1977 — and it was thrown away. God bless her, and may her soul rest, despite all that was thrown away.
More stories this table can tell
Drew Anderson is another story this table can tell. He was James's neighbor, and as James put these business plans together, Drew heard every business detail first — a confidant and a collaborator. His song "Witnessing the Maker's Hand" is the one written and produced speaking of Drew Anderson. James's mother loved Drew Anderson very much; she loved everybody, and Drew held a place of his own in that love.
Marilyn Thorne is another — James's biggest supporter and his collaborator, the woman his song "My Marilyn, My Star Returned" was written for. And of course Hydie Hodges is another — Miss Hydie, James's next-door neighbor in Irvington, the dear neighbor he wrote his gospel ballad for. And there are many others besides: the names carried in these singles are all stories this table can tell, every one of them being added to his mother's book as James completes it.
Dylan Meehan is another. He is the reason James created "Mechanic of the Heart" — in James's own archive, the piece stands as "The Mechanic of the Heart (for Dylan)".
And Aaron Benson is another — two songs came out of his story: "The Call I Didn't Have to Make" and "The Edge of the Equation".
The standard
Loyalty and respect aren't the slogan — they're the standard the work is held to. Every release is written, produced, tagged, and stamped in-house by one man with no staff and no shortcuts, out of Irvington, Alabama. $1 from every copy of The Proclamations and The Chronicles goes to the 501(c)(3) pledge.
Let us pray.
